Sangirardi e Cavicchi

Concert Model

This Sangirardi e Cavicchi Concert model is an Italian interpretation of the Spanish tradition: cedar at its heart, bones laid in an asymmetrical fan to brace the soundboard, and a voice that arrives with colour already alive in the grain. The basses are dark, present and well grounded; the trebles rounded, pliant and honeyed; and between them lies a generous sympathetic resonance that lets harmony gather, warm and blossom with the gentlest touch of the fingers.

There is an immediate sense of musical identity here. Sangirardi e Cavicchi conceived this Concert model around an asymmetrical fan-bracing system derived from the classic Spanish tradition, and that choice gives the instrument much of its personality. The response strikes the fine balance of being forgiving on the fingers yet immediate in attack, with a broad colour palette and a natural affinity for Spanish and Romantic repertoire, where harmony, warmth and resonance are of paramount importance.

The Western Red Cedar top gives the sound its warmth, depth and chest rumbling resonance, while the Malaysian Blackwood back and sides add richness and thick overtone content. There is a lovely contrast between the golden warmth of the cedar and the darker figure of the back and sides: an instrument that feels earthy, elegant and unmistakably individual.

No. 94 measures its inherited Spanish roots and Italian allure with fine judgement. Against the amber warmth of the cedar, the rosette becomes a small theatre of Italian ornament: pale shell-like treasures, dark lines of tracery and glints of iridescence arranged around the soundhole like a miniature fresco, a chapel of light at the threshold of the guitar’s voice granting passage to the sound.

The supporting appointments are elegant too: Madagascar Rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge continues the dark, premium visual character, whilst the choice of wood for the neck harks back to the guitar’s Spanish-school DNA. Gotoh tuners are a fine choice to provide the practical assurance of smooth, stable tuning.

The voice is broad, earthy and responsive. The basses have real presence: deep, resonant and well defined, with enough structure to keep chord work clear. The midrange is full and vocal, giving inner lines substance and warmth without clouding the texture. The trebles are rounded and buttery, with a pleasing brightness on the first string that gives the upper register an extra singing edge.

This is a particularly satisfying guitar for chordal writing. Full harmonies open easily, with generous overtones around the fundamental note and a bold, unmistakably Spanish colour. Chords do not simply sound and vanish; they hang for a moment in the air, warm and burnished, as if the instrument is reluctant to let them go.

This Sangirardi e Cavicchi Concert model would suit a conservatoire or university student, an advancing classical guitarist, or a serious amateur looking for a handmade concert guitar with warmth, depth and Spanish-school character. It is a compelling route into Concert grade instruments with a strong musical identity: resonant, expressive and full of character, with the kind of voice that feels rooted in tradition while still speaking with its own accent.
